Why Write?

  • People write for all sorts of reasons – memos for work, grocery shopping lists, checks for paying bills, notes to self to remember tasks, complaints about a problem, birthday cards, emails and quick texts to arrange dinner with friends – but also journals to reflect on life and its challenges, letters (digital or by hand) to children, lovers or grandparents, poems stuffed away in a drawer, treasured memories or family stories. Writing matters!
  • Writing has been part of being human ever since people started drawing on cave walls or sitting around a fire to tell the tales of their ancestors so the children wouldn’t forget.
  • Write Across Chicago is about:
    • helping and encouraging people to write for self-expression, which many people say they value but don’t find time for.
    • writing to help you get a handle on life’s challenges by putting them into words.
    • preserving memories.
    • sharing who you are and what matters to you with sympathetic readers/listeners.
    • having fun with words and stories.
  • Write Across Chicago is not about writing classes or getting grades – though it’s great for classes to join, too.
  • Write Across Chicago is for people of all ages, all walks of life, all parts of our city and its many cultures.
  • So join us by starting or joining a writing group for the month of October, at your office, library branch, community organization, or class!
